Transition Year

Our Transition Year Programme offers a wide variety of topics and subjects. Students who have completed Transition Year are, we believe, better informed when it comes to choosing subjects.

Why Transition Year?

Year students become more involved with their immediate community through work experience, voluntary work and community work.  Students can also follow and develop special interests for example sporting, leisure or academic.

There is also space and opportunity to concentrate on some aspects of learning which do not always feature on either the Junior or Leaving Certificate Courses.  Qualities which might not otherwise flourish are often developed.

The flexibility offered by the programme means it can be an ideal opportunity for students to respond to challenges such as Gaisce – the President’s Award, First Aid, Self Defence, Peer Mentoring and the TY Musical.

Aims

During Transition year students can:

  • Develop qualities such as: respect, co-operation and courtesy
  • Acquire a deeper knowledge of themselves thus helping them establish realistic, educational and life ambitions
  • Be introduced to all subjects on the Senior Cycle Curriculum
  • Take the opportunity to investigate a variety of careers, through work experience
  • Develop the independent research and study skills necessary for Senior Cycle and Third Level
  • Take the initiative and develop self-confidence through group activities and teamwork

TY students have the opportunity to study all subjects on the Senior Cycle Curriculum on a modular basis. Hence 10- or/and 15-week modules are provided in:

Accounting Home Economics
Business Mini Company
Art Film Studies/Media
Public Speaking/Debating Careers
Biology Physics
Chemistry

*Community Care and Work Experience are also important aspects of the Transition year Programme.
